Blue Skies Will Come Your Way Again
By Douglas E. Adair
I produced this while “sheltering in place” with my wife Carla Adair in our apartment across the river from Washington, DC. We’re just up the hill from the Iwo Jima Marine Corps Memorial and we look across the Potomac to the Lincoln Memorial, the Washington Monument and the US Capitol. There are 700,000+ soldiers and others buried in Arlington Cemetery, down the street from our apartment building.
Looking out on this magnificent landscape, I feel fortunate to be living here because it provides me with a constant reminder of our nation’s history and makes it impossible to take for granted everything it means to be an American. Because every day, I am reminded of the millions of Americans (most were immigrants or sons and daughters of immigrants) who have made sacrifices for our country. And especially now, we remember all the first responders, medical professionals and frontline workers in essential businesses who are making extraordinary sacrifices during the COVID 19 Crisis.
As our history has shown time and time again, when ALL the American people focus on the commonalities which bind us together not only as citizens, but as a people, we succeed. If we have the will, we can put our differences aside, find the strength we need to bend instead of breaking, and work together to solve problems for good of everyone.
I especially want to pay tribute to all those who’ve come before us including my parents, their grandparents, and their parents and grandparents before them. I’ve been working for some time now on a Tribute Show to the legendary Burl Ives who I was fortunate to know and work with in the mid 70s. I was 23 and he was 66 at the time. He and his wife asked me to make sure Burl’s memory would not be forgotten after he had passed on. Burl was born in a small town in rural Illinois in 1909 and it’s been 111 years since his birth. He came of age during the Depression and began his career as a film actor, folk and popular music singer, and Broadway performer before and during World War II.
Considering the troubling times in which we’re now living, the reintroduction of basic values such as kindness, integrity, civility, humility, empathy, responsibility, equality, dignity and unity, are as important today as they were back in Burl’s time.
I’m deeply troubled by the number of people who are complaining about the comparatively small sacrifice they’re being asked to make by staying at home and, in turn, limiting exposure of themselves and others to the novel coronavirus. When you consider the extent of the sacrifices of those who now rest in Arlington Cemetery and on other battlefields and war zones around the world along with the sacrifices of our parents, grandparents and folks like Burl Ives who survived the Depression and then prospered, complying with “stay-at-home orders” hardly merits serious comparison.

Blue Skies Will Come Your Way Again
© By Doug Adair
Chorus
If it feels like the rain is falling down, down, down
Seems like it’s never gonna end
Don’t forget about tomorrow and the brighter days ahead
When those blue skies will come your way again
Verse 1
I remember looking out my window
Seeing storm clouds hover round the trees
Mama said these words to give me courage
After all these years I still believe
Chorus
If it feels like the rain is falling down, down, down
Seems like it’s never gonna end
Don’t forget about tomorrow and the brighter days ahead
When those blue skies will come your way again
Verse 2
Growing up I faced so many trials
Troubles seemed to haunt me all the way
I used to feel like giving up and crying
This is what I’d tell myself each day
Chorus
If it feels like the rain is falling down, down, down
Seems like it’s never gonna end
Don’t forget about tomorrow and the brighter days ahead
When those blue skies will come your way again
Verse 3
Once again I’m underneath a storm cloud
Out of work, the rent’s way overdue
Even in my deepest, darkest hour,
Momma’s simple words still ring so true
Chorus
If it feels like the rain is falling down, down, down
Seems like it’s never gonna end
Don’t forget about tomorrow and the brighter days ahead
When those blue skies will come your way again
Yes, there are blue skies waiting ‘round the bend
